- Animal Welfare Concerns | Alma Hondon
Animal Welfare Concerns in Spain At ALMA Hondon, our commitment to safeguarding the well-being of animals is paramount. We recognize the importance of discussing the sensitive topic of Animal Cruelty, focusing on prevention, vigilance, and proper reporting procedures. It's essential to bear in mind that the treatment of pets in Spain may differ from what we're accustomed to. Before raising concerns about how a neighbour keeps their dog, remember that as long as the dog has access to food, water, shelter, and protection from extreme weather, authorities may not consider this as animal abuse. Understanding Animal Cruelty Animal cruelty encompasses intentionally causing harm, injury, o r death to an animal. It can also involve neglect, such as withholding food, water, shelter, and necessary medical care. What constitutes pet neglect? Pet neglect involves failing to provide adequate food, water, shelter, or veterinary care for the animal's survival. It can be intentional or unintentional, resulting in significant suffering for the animal. Distinguishing between animal abuse and neglect: Intentional cruelty involves purposefully causing physi cal harm to an animal. Neglect refers to the failure to meet an animal's basic needs, like food, water, shelter, or medical care. Animals left without proper shelter in extreme weather conditions fall under this category. How to Report Animal Cruelty in Spain For expatriates and those not proficient in Spanish, reporting animal abuse can be challenging due to concerns about potential backlash and the correct reporting process. To report incidents of animal cruelty, neglect, mistreatment, injury, or distress in Spain, you must visit your local Police Comisaría in person and submit a written report known as a "denuncia." Gather as much evidence as possible, including photographs, videos, and relevant dates. Providing clear directions and a map can aid authorities in understanding the situation. Ensure you have identification documents such as NIE/Residencia or a passport. A Guardia Civil officer may assist you in completing the denuncia. A copy will be sent to Seprona for investigation, and you should retain a copy as well. You can follow up on your report of animal cruelty by presenting your copy of the denuncia at the station. When dealing with severe cases of animal abuse or neglect, rest assured that Seprona (the environmental division of the Guardia Civil) treats these matters seriously. Seprona (Servicio de Protección de la Naturaleza) is a unit within the Guardia Civil dedicated to nature conservation and animal welfare across Spain. You can also contact Seprona via email at seprona@guardiacivil.org . Important Notes: The person filing the denuncia must identify themselves, as required by law. However, the denuncia's purpose is solely to inform authorities, who will take action against the reported party, not the individual reporting the incident. To understand and follow the instructions on our website effectively, a reasonable command of Spanish is necessary. If you lack proficiency, consider seeking assistance from a fluent friend. Please note that the information provided does not constitute legal advice. It's intended to inform you, and seeking professional guidance is advisable before taking any legal action.

< Back to all Rescued/Rescatado 12/10/2022 EN A concerned Neighbour contacted us about Spike and Toby who were living in a dirty cage and not being regularly fed and given water, unless the neighbour went to look after them. When we arrived they had open wounds and other obvious signs of skin infections and they were walking in a mass of their own poo. Thankfully their owner agreed to give them to the association and we became their legal guardians. They went to the vets and tested positive for leishmania. After the initial treatment, recent tests have confirmed their leishmanis is under control and they now just take daily tablets. Spike and Toby are brothers and have always been together. They are good with other dogs although Toby can be a bit reactive when he is on his own. < Back to all EN Chris and four other podencos were found over the space of four or five days last year. They were all from the same group and took a lot of coaxing to allow rescuers to help them as they were so timid. She was exceedingly thin and emaciated, but was thankfully found without any of the usual diseases associated with abandoned animals. She loves to play and cuddle her foster brother and foster family alike, but because of her past takes a little time to get used to men. Once her trust is gained she is a truly noble and loyal companion.
